National Nutrition Month, an annual campaign by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, is celebrated every March. During this month, everyone is invited to learn about nutrition, healthy lifestyle behaviors and informed food choices.

This year, the theme is “Food Connects Us,” which celebrates how food is a way to connect with our friends and family, as well as to other communities and cultures. By understanding how a meal is prepared, where the ingredients are sourced, and who it was made by, we not only can better understand what factors influence the foods we eat, but also how food can directly impact our health.

What is “Food Insecurity?”

What is “Food Insecurity?” *

Food insecurity is an official term from the USDA. It's when people don't have enough to eat and don't know where their next meal will come from. It's a big problem in the United States, where 47 million people, including 14 million children, experience food insecurity annually.

  • 100% of the counties in the United States are home to people facing hunger

  • Child Food Insecurity also exists in every community in the United States, sometimes reaching rates as high as 50%

  • 8 out of 10 high food insecurity counties are in the South

  • Nearly 50% of people facing hunger are unlikely to qualify for SNAP

  • 9 out of 10 high food insecurity counties are rural

  • Food insecurity among Black or Latino individuals is higher than white individuals in more than 9 out of 10 counties with comparable data

You can help! Food insecurity isn’t just about hunger—it’s about seeing the invisible, loving our neighbors, and building communities where no one is left behind. Together, we can fulfill Christ’s call to feed the hungry and care for the least of these.
